Bluewater Creek Catchment Management and Riparian Zone Restoration


Location: Bluewater Creek catchment and riparian zone


Organisation: Bluewater Catchment Landcare Inc.


Project Summary:

The Bluewater Creek catchment has three distinct 'rural' land uses: broad scale grazing, protected areas (National Park) and rural residential or peri-urban blocks. The catchment would benefit from a coordinated approach to the management of the Bluewater Creek riparian corridor inclusive of the peri-urban areas.

In addition Cyclone Yasi has caused damage to the riparian vegetation allowing exotic species to become established in the understorey. Work is required to reduce the extent of exotic species and encourage natural regeneration of native species.

Completed actions and events:

Location: Lower Bluewater Creek riparian zone
Landowner: Various private landholders
Area: ~270 hectares (5 kilometres x 200 metres downstream of the highway and 8.5 kilometres x 200 metres upstream of the highway)

•    Singapore Daisy and other weeds cleared at Bruce Highway site - February/April 2012
•    Tree planting day with Bluewater School - 27 April 2012
•    Riparian landholders contacted with workshop overview - April 2012
•    Meeting to discuss project progress and VRM trials - 19 October 2012
•    Emails about removing plastic from creek side before rain - 18 December 2012
