A combined Townsville Council, State Government, Commonwealth and community based initiative to maintain and enhance
our healthy waterways in the coastal dry tropics.

Welcome

This site contains information on the Creek to Coral program, a Townsville City Council initiative that fosters the sustainable use and management of coastal marine and freshwater environments. You will find information on the coastal floodplains, catchments and wetlands of the Townsville region, including:

Water Quality

Townsville is located on a coastal floodplain and ringed by mountains, with the Great Barrier Reef lying just offshore. The coastline features beaches, mangroves, saltpans and wetlands, as well as much-loved community assets such as The Strand and the Jezzine Barracks precinct. Maintaining clean waterways and managing run off is vital to the health of the Reef, the community and the unique dry tropics environment.

You can explore the catchments and sub-basins via the C2C’s Water Quality Improvement Plan here

Water Conservation

Townsville is based in the dry tropics, with hot humid summers and dry winters. 80% of our rain falls between December and March. We are one of the fastest growing cities in regional Australia, with most of our supply coming from the Ross Dam. DAM LINK

This seasonal variability and rapid population increase means that is increasingly important to conserve water. To learn how to use water more efficiently, especially in your dry tropics garden, visit our Strong Lawns Section

Education and Training

Council’s Integrated Sustainability staff are available to provide education activities for schools and the community, based around the themes of water, energy and biodiversity conservation. Booking forms and information are here

More specialised training is also available, particularly in the area of soil erosion and sediment control. The Erosion and Sediment Control page has the details.

Partnerships

The Creek to Coral program works across the community and in partnership with all levels of government, non-government and commercial organisations. C2C also funds the Creekwatch program, a volunteer initiative that monitors our local waterways. If you’re interested, contact Conseration Volunteers Australia here
