Hot Spots
In terms of the Coastal Catchments Initiative (CCI), 'hot spots' are broadly defined as coastal waters of high conservation value threatened by pollution, and where there is a strong jurisdictional commitment and capacity to improve water quality.
The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) catchment is considered to be one such hot spot. Funding was provided through the CCI to prepare water quality improvement plans for a number of GBR regions between 2004 (Douglas Shire) and 2010 (Townsville City).
