Theme 1: Community-Based Education & Involvement (CBEI)

What is Community-Based Education & Involvement (CBEI)?
CBEI is a Townsville City Council initiative to transform water management culture and paradigms through enhanced community participation in environmental activities. The vision is for communities to have ongoing, long-term ownership of local environments and habitats. Creek to Coral is facilitating CBEI across Townsville and Thuringowa regions.

One of the objectives of Creek to Coral is to inform, educate, involve and engender community based stewardship, awareness and ownership of Catchment issues through Eco-Catchment Education Tours, NQ Wetlands Festival, EcoFiesta, School Programs (Reef Guardian Schools, Sustainable Schools, Reef Beat etc.) Visit the Youth Environment Network (YEN) website and learn about water conservation and other exciting community events!

Creek to Coral actively supports the community stewardship of Total Water Cycle Management through on-ground programs and through the involvement of community groups such as Seagrass Watch, Creekwatch, Coastcare, Reef Check or Conservation Volunteers Australia.
It utilizes tools and techniques associated with Community Based Social Marketing (CBSM)

Creek to Coral organises quarterly community events, focusing on various initiatives or concerns such as plastic pollution in the marine environment, stormwater, Gross Pollutant Traps (GPTs), rubbish in waterways etc.

Creek to Coral networks with the Centre for Excellence in Tropical Design (CETD), a knowledge hub for specialists on tropical design, innovation, and sustainability.
