Urban Water Quality Improvement Workshop

Groups involved with the development of ‘Reef’ Water Quality Improvement Plans met in Townsville on Wednesday 28 October 2009 for an Urban Storm Water Management (USWM) Workshop. The workshop was organised by Creek to Coral and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DERM) to assist with the development of coordinated responses to urban stormwater management issues impacting local waterways and the marine waters of the Great Barrier Reef.

One of the key outcomes of the workshop was the commitment by local governments from Bundaberg to Cairns, regional NRM groups (also from Bundaberg to Cairns) and DERM to work together on urban stormwater management improvement through the ‘Reef Urban Stormwater Management Improvement Group’ (RUSMIG).

Workshop notes and presentations are available below.

Follow up meetings were held in Mackay (March) and Brisbane in 2010 and Rockhampton in 2011. In 2013 RUSMIG and Water by Design (Healthy Waterways) successfully applied for Caring for our Country (Reef Rescue) funds to conduct the Collaboration to the Rescue project. Another four RUSMIG meetings were held in conjunction with that project in 2013 and 2014.
