Increasing Community Engagement in Townsville Coastal Catchments for Biodiversity Project |
Short Title: Toomulla Foreshore |
Toomulla Foreshore Restoration and Revegetation |
Location: Toomulla foreshore |
Organisation: Toomulla Coastcare |
Project Summary: The Toomulla community has been involved in foreshore restoration and management work along The Esplanade for a number of years and significant progress has been made in restoring natural habitat features to the area.Cyclone Yasi, at the start of February 2011, caused considerable damage to the Toomulla foreshore with initial clean up efforts carried out soon after the event to reinstate access and remove any obviously dangerous vegetation. There was however a significant amount of damage to vegetation within the restoration site that was not considered a hazard to human safety. This area was therefore not treated as a priority for post-cyclone relief and was considered to be a recovery action by the assessment team. The damaged vegetation constitutes a fire hazard and has altered the 'natural' structure of the site thereby inhibiting the process of natural regeneration and succession. This project will increase the capacity of Toomulla Coastcare and community volunteers to remove the fallen timber from the site and subsequently continue with the restoration and revegetation process. |
